LSI Latent Semantic Indexing
When we are talking about LSI keywords, we are really talking about LSI latent semantic indexing. The principle concept regarding Latent Semantic Indexing is simply to discover top keywords that are relevant inside the context of any article or number of documents.
Way back when the Internet marketing was new, it seemed it was easy to rank on the search engines by stuffing a single keyword into an article and get it ranked on the first page of the search engines.
This led way to many internet marketers spamming their articles to trick the search engines to ranking them, giving the user a load of crappy, spammy sales pages dominating the rankings.
In today’s SEO market, Google places a huge emphasis on synonyms, key words that Google thinks are related to the keyword in question. The latest Google algorithms updates place more emphasis on content for on-page optimization.
Essentially, Google looks at all the keywords on a page, pairs them up with similar keywords and groups them in clusters. The largest cluster of keywords or keyword phrases then helps to determine the topic or ‘main keyword’ that your page is about.
If your site was about weight loss, then you would want to find keywords that are related to the weight loss niche.
Obviously, this is not the only factor involved in determining how Google decides what your page topic is, but this plays, and always has played, a big part in on-page optimization.
It is these related words or synonym keywords that are called LSI keywords, or Latent Semantic Indexing keywords.
LSI Keywords and how to use them to your benefit.
If you were thinking the easiest way to get Google to give your page a high keyword ranking and have it show up on page one of the search for a particular keyword was to stuff that keyword throughout your article, you would be wrong.
The preferred keyword density ratio for most search engines will vary, but as a rule of thumb 2-3% would help ensure a good success rate. Much higher and you risk being penalized for keyword stuffing. I usually use my main keyword 2 to 3 times for every 100 words as long as the article reads OK.
However, what carries more weight with Google is the LSI keywords appearing throughout the article. In other words, the more LSI keywords you have ‘backing up’ your main keyword, the more important and relevant your main keyword will appear to the search engines.
Basically, you simply want lots of LSI keywords to create the largest cluster, and your want the main keyword as the center.
So as SEO marketers, we go to a lot of trouble using keyword tools to find the most ‘highly weighted’ Google keywords. Why? Because we want to find the MOST related keywords, the ones which will link closest to our main keyword and therefore give our article the largest keyword ranking possible.
How do we find LSI Keywords – LSI Keyword Tool?
So first of all we’ve got to find out what the LSI keywords are. As we are posting on purpose for a specific money keyword to rank on page one of Google, we DO NOT GUESS.
With the use of keyword research software it is simple to find out what the most important LSI keywords are, just go to the very company we are trying to impress, Google, and use Google’s own keyword generator, the free Google keyword tool.
Google is more that happy to tell us, in order of importance, exactly what are the LSI keywords for any given main keyword.
Here is the step by step procedure to find your “LSI keyword” list right from Google itself:
(To find the free Google Keyword Tool go to Google search and type in ‘free google keyword tool’. Click on the first entry and it will take you to the keyword generator.)
Step #1: Go to the free Google Keyword Tool and type in your main keyword.
Step #2: In the results you will see your main keyword plus a whole lot of other related keywords listed below. These are your LSI keywords.
These are additional keywords that Google would expect to find on a page, (for example) with ‘weight loss’ as the main keyword, and all related or relevant keywords to the term ‘weigh loss’ listed as LSI keywords without actually having the term ‘weight loss’ in them.
How many LSI Keywords should you use?
Although Google will punish you for stuffing (spamming) a single keyword, they reward you for ‘smart’ stuffing a variety of LSI keywords.
Common practise suggests to incorporate at least 10 to 12 LSI keywords into an article of at least 500 to 600 words.
LSI Keyword Variances
It’s important to note that many additional keywords are longer versions of the main keyword, and may be referred to as ‘long tailed keywords’.
Every search conducted by Google is typed in by an actual person. And often they will type in something that is completely unique to them, but that no one else has searched for.
These obscure keywords are where a good part of your traffic to your site can come from. These can also be LSI keywords that you never even optimized for.
